The Silent Witness
There are times when as believers we actively share our faith and strive to bring glory to God. Yet I believe our silent witness is far more powerful. The believers who shared the gospel with me in college had a great impact, because I saw Jesus in their lives.
So what is the Christian’s silent witness? Our silent witness is when we unconsciously reflect Jesus’ nature in our words and actions.
Son Shine
Just as a lamp sheds light, a fragrance lingers in the air and a little salt flavors a dish, so the Lord reveals His nature to unbelievers as we live our ordinary lives.
The Holy Spirit shines out of us when we aren’t looking. He uses us to change a person’s heart—and we don’t notice. We return good for evil when wronged and God’s enemies are stunned and even convicted. All that’s required for a Christian to have a tremendous impact in this world is to keep obediently walking with Jesus. When we do, our lamplight grows brighter.
After all, salt doesn’t try to be salty and light doesn’t strive to shine.
A Fun Prayer to Pray
See my little chipmunk meme?
Use me today Jesus and you don’t have to tell me about it.
If you’ve struggled with pride in the past like I have, this is the perfect prayer to pray. Because if I’m not aware of God using me, I’m not tempted to take the credit.
By the way, I am much less proud than I used to be. But no one will ever hear me call myself humble; not in this lifetime.
Non-Christians often check us out to see if we’re genuine. In our world today, a simple act of kindness can stun people. So does a heartfelt apology, because offended people filled with hurt pride don’t apologize. Our whole culture has become “thin-skinned” and easily offended. The virtues of kindness and humility are getting rarer. So a person reflecting Jesus’ humility, kindness, wisdom and generosity often can be used by God to have a powerful, life-changing impact.
A Special Bonus
If you too begin to pray my ‘chipmunk prayer’ just believe by faith that God is working. Because He is. The special bonus? Very occasionally you’ll learn how the Lord used you in someone else’s life, when you weren’t looking.

Author’s note: I used this image of a chipmunk in my meme because chipmunks are small, weak and helpless, just like we often are. Yet God uses the smallest things to bring about His will on the earth.
According to legend, God once used a small spider to save the life of a believer, fleeing from Roman soldiers. Check out this story in my earlier post, “The Saint’s Great Escape”
