Loving the Almighty
Human beings seem to be built to receive love in different ways. But the Trinity has a unique love language and Jesus tells us what it is.
What is Jesus’ love language? Obedience. Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching…24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching… Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching…” (John 14:23-24 NIV)
What is a Love Language?
The 5 love languages for people are:
- Physical Touch
- Acts of Service
- Affirming Words
- Receiving Gifts
- Quality Time
Each of us feels loved when people ‘speak to us’ in our love language. One person needs quality time together, while another feels special and cherished when someone gives them a thoughtful gift.
Unfortunately if I see a friend in pain, my natural tendency is to give love to other people the same way I want to receive it. So I think I’m showing loving, concern and warm empathy. But what if if their love language is a different one? Then my friend feels very unloved; neglected and alone.
I need to always speak the other person’s love language, not my own.
When Does the Almighty Feel Loved?
Jesus highlights obedience as the Trinity’s true love language.
But obeying God requires deepening trust, because living a life of faith is hard to do.
Here’s a few key questions:
- Do I love God more than my own comfortable, safe life?
- Am I willing to obey God even if I’m rejected, ridiculed or persecuted?
- Have I given my Savior the right to interrupt my plans?
- Are my hopes and dreams surrendered into the Lord’s hands, to be thrown away if He chooses? Because He may want to take my life in another direction.
These questions convict me too. We each struggle against our own selfish desires and fears.
But the main question is simple.
Do I love God enough to do whatever He asks, no matter what the personal cost?
